Three male Equus Ballators trudged through the muddy ground of an open field in North America. Ayen walked in company of his mate Bahadur once again, but also with his childhood friend whom he considered a brother, Aeneas.

The Mountain had only met Bahadur a few times before, when they both visited Ayen’s stables at the same time, but they had not learned much of each other in the meantime. Ayen hoped they would all be able to bond over this hunt.

For now though, he cuddled with Bahadur, who had his head over his, both looking affectionately at each other. It was hard to walk, but both agreed that it was worth it.

Aeneas was at the forefront of their procession, and rolled his eyes in good humor. “Could you guys stop with that mushy stuff? Gross.” The gelding said teasingly.

“Hey, we had to hunt with a maniac yesterday, give us a break.” Bahadur said with a breathy laugh.

“Fair enough.” Aeneas chuckled.

“Yeah and his neck is so comfy I want to melt into it and never leave.” Ayen joked.

The other two males laughed, though Bahadur could feel himself blushing and feeling a tad shy at the comment. “You’re a cutie.” He blurted adoringly at his mate.

“So are you.” Ayen nuzzled his mate.

“Aether and Ares, help me.” Aeneas snorted, though also in good humor. He did not mind their affections, but they were trying to hunt here!

The Desert stallions started a conversation, and the Mountain thought he heard about his mother and about how she came back. His heart knotted slightly at the mention of her, but he was glad she was okay and that the drama was over. He hoped to see her again soon.

“Guys.” He exclaimed calmly, calling out to his companions. “It’s hunting time.”

“Right.” The mates said in unison and hanged their heads.

The trio continued their search.

“Oh by the way what are we hunting today?” Bahadur piped up, letting go of Ayen who let out a small whiny sound at the loss of contact.

“Cottontail rabbits.” Aeneas answered. “We should be close.”

“I don’t smell any.” Ayen said.

“Then let’s keep moving.”

The Equus Ballator males went on, shaking their hooves every once in a while from the mud that accumulated under them, the gloomy weather still very much present in the sky. That did not deter them. Aeneas looked up a mound of rocks up a mountain close to them, and saw that some of the rocks were loose. Ayen was standing underneath it.

Instincts kicking in, he ran for his friend, yelling a “watch out!” before his lone forehead horn connected with Ayen’s rump, who let out a loud yelp and jumped out of the way, landing face first in the dirt and Aeneas quickly running out of the way as the rocks fell. Bahadur got out of the way in time as well.

And as he caught the sight of his mate sprawled into the mud, he burst out laughing. Aeneas joined him.

“Ha, ha.” Ayen said, sarcasm dripping in his voice. “Would you laugh if that was you instead?”

“Yeah think so.” Bahadur chuckled. “Nothing broken, love?”

“Nothing broken, love. But thanks for the save, brother.” Ayen directed his last comment at the Mountain gelding.

“No problem. Now…” He started, but his muzzle twitched as he caught a scent in the wind.

“I’m smelling something. Do you guys smell the same thing?”

The Desert stallions imitated him as Bahadur helped support Ayen’s body so he could get up. “We do.”

“Then we should be close to our prey.”

Ayen turned to the left. “This should be the way.”

They cantered, and stopped a few seconds later at the base of the same mountain they circumnavigated, only keeping a small portion of their heads visible to be able to observe their prey without being detected.

A small group of cottontails were gathered around a tree where they picked their meal. Bahadur got out of his hiding place slowly, though Aeneas gave him hushed warnings not to do it. The Desert approached, and the rabbits’ ears twitched, hearing his steps. They turned around.

“Well, shit.” The stallion whispered.

The rabbits took a moment to see his razor-sharp teeth sticking out of his mouth, but when they did, it was a free-for-all. They ran to and fro, and Ayen and Aeneas shot out of the darkness and chased after them.

“I’ll go after these ones, you two go after them.” Aeneas instructed as he quickly pointed out the prey.

The Deserts nodded and went to work. “I’ll herd these to you, babe!” Bahadur told Ayen as he ran after five of them.

“Okay!”

Bahadur had to concentrate hard on the task, watching the creatures turn away from him, and them being small enough to escape under his legs, he had to be extra careful. He snapped at them, keeping them moving in the direction he wanted.

Ayen positionned himself, ready to capture them or help his lover, should it be needed.

Aeneas for his part, struggled, but kept his cool. He grabbed three in one fell swoop by the tail and let them go long enough to grab them again and break their necks. He ran to his companions, letting the corpses fall to the ground to a spot where he and his companions could settle down to eat when the hunt was done. But it was far from over, and he ran back to them.

Ayen had followed a rabbit with his gaze and saw it escaping Bahadur, and so he swept in and caught it, killing it immediately.

“Hey guys, need help?” Aeneas asked.

“If you wouldn’t mind, brother!”

Acting as a team, each of them hanged their heads low to catch the remaining prey at the same time, not letting any of them go. Bahadur grabbed two, Aeneas caught three, and Ayen managed to get one.

“Looks like I win.” Aeneas chuckled.

“Hey who said this was a competition?” Ayen gasped, mocking offense.

Bahadur just laughed.

The males installed themselves where Aeneas had left the first rabbits he caught, Ayen and Bahadur sitting close and snuggling. Aeneas thought of his mate and how he couldn’t wait to be with her again at home.

They all started conversing and making jokes, having fun together. Bahadur licking the mud off of Ayen and both giving each other loving looks and affectionate licks afterwards.

Ayen looked at his adoptive brother and sighed.

“Sometime you, big sister and I should hunt together. What do you say?”

“I’d love that.” Aeneas smiled.

Whoo, did my part of a three-way hunting trade with Aspi-Galou and xSleepingForestx .
I had this idea (especially the "Aeneas' horn connects to Ayen's rump which makes him jump' part I thought it would be hilarious.) since a long while and finally I decided to write it hueheuehuh.

Hope you enjoy!
